There's a bit of a story behind this very special painting. When the COVID pandemic hit, I was in Bali completing my dive master course. I'll save you all the details, but my journey back to Canada was not an easy or pleasant one, and being stripped away from the ocean hit hard. I ended up back in Canada staying with family. This is the closest thing I have created to a self portrait. It was completed over the course of 6 weeks as a way to deal with my lifestyle being stripped away, it was my way of being able to stay underwater, my absolute favourite place to be. There are countless elements that appeared and disappeared as I worked on it and processed the situation, the layers in this one shifted as the story changed, as my emotions progressed. It reflects a darker period for me, but also tells a story of growth and discovery as I dove on a journey within myself as opposed to travelling the world over the past few years I've spent as an artist. It is, indeed, a very special piece to me, one that's unlocked a new way to paint.
